Trail Overview

Embark on the iconic route leading to Mike's Sky Ranch. While the stretch to the ranch itself isn't particularly demanding and can be navigated with a high-clearance 2WD vehicle, it serves as the starting point for several more challenging trails. Initially, expect some washboard sections, a testament to the annual passage of Baja racers. However, the road gradually smoothes out, offering a blend of captivating desert and mountain vistas. Beyond the initial leg, the drive becomes an enjoyable rollercoaster of constant ups and downs. Upon arrival at the ranch, you'll discover a fascinating history of Baja racing, along with lodging and dining facilities.

Difficulty

While certain segments demand careful tire placement and may feature rain ruts presenting occasional challenges, this route typically doesn't pose significant difficulty. However, it's essential to bear in mind that Baja conditions can shift, particularly during wet weather.

History

Mike's Sky Ranch stands out as one of Baja California's most renowned "sky ranches," despite the absence of an open airstrip for pilots for over three decades. Today, the term "Sky" refers more to its lofty elevation of 4,000 feet above sea level. Mike Leon, an avid off-road enthusiast, left an indelible mark on the ranch. He not only competed but triumphed in the Baja 1000, clinching first place in 1984, and repeated his success in the 1985 Baja 500. His enduring passion continues to resonate. Upon arrival, guests are warmly welcomed by the staff and invited to relax in the "sala" or living room. This space serves as a veritable shrine to off-road history, adorned with everything from business cards adorning the walls to t-shirts filling every inch of the ceiling.
