Trail Overview
Sumner Pass Road is mostly large rip rap and large loose rock that becomes more overgrown with grass and vegetation as you get farther down the road, and then ends early due to a mudslide, and trees and debris are buried up covering the road. There is an old wooden bridge to cross over, and you will pass a cliff and canyon on the right, a deep rock quarry is located midway up the road before coming to another section of muskeg. Fbaz trees along the road. There are nice scenic views of muskeg and dense forested areas on this road. It does not appear to be a well-driven road. A lot of Bear sign both Black and Brown Bear as well as spotting a Brown bear running across the road. Deer are seen here as well as porcupines, and Wolves have been seen here in the past. There are 2 dry camping areas, both are towards the end of the road, which turns into a closed road due to a mudslide. Rating is a 4 as this is a one lane, becoming overgrown, possible turnarounds in the two campsite areas. There is a lot of wildlife in this area. Be safety minded as there are Brown Bear, Black Bear, Deer, and Porcupines in this area. Driving on the road, you can see obvious signs of bears, Deer, and Porcupines. Weather plays a part in the level of difficulty as this is in a rainforest and a lot of these roads are going through areas of muskeg/wetlands. There are sections of loose rock and parts of the road have drop offs where there is a gain in elevation towards the end. There are great views of muskeg/wetlands and the valley at the top of the trail on a clear day. Tall grass, ferns, a variety of trees, devils club, lichens, moss and flowers can be seen along the road. Views: Scenic landscapes.Warnings: Keep on the road (Muskeg and wetlands) and drop off areas. Watch for signs of road deterioration or washouts due to heavy rainfall. Be mindful of wildlife, especially Bears. No cell service noted. Check weather conditions and be prepared for rain, fog with low visibility, and lower temperatures. It is a rainforest. Suggested best time of year: June - October. Note: This road is a down and back.
