Trail Overview
This trail begins on the Middlemarch Road (Abril Mine), climbs through the San Juan Mine at Gordon Camp then continues to the top of China Peak at 7073' elevation. There are a couple loose, steep climbs but the view from the top is great. There is a series of ledges climbing up from the Middlemarch Road to "The Gate". Not difficult, but bumpy. After the gate, there are a couple of roads to the right that we did not have time to explore. One of them is called "The Switchbacks of Death". I believe this mine was the San Juan Zinc Mine. It appears there were two "San Juan" mines near Tombstone. See the report from the Arizona Geological Survey in a pdf file at the bottom of the page. The road is smooth for a while after the gap, then the level 6 part begins with a series of tight switchbacks.
