Trail Overview
Surrounding Smoot starts in a pasture, with views on all sides that are indicative of the high plateau vistas of this area of the Kaibab National Forest. Rocky, and one lane, TREAD LIGHTLY principals are in effect, so please do stay on established paths. After crossing the pasture, you'll head toward the forest of Juniper Trees, where the trail becomes more rocky. Out of the trees you'll encounter Smoot Lake, a mud lake comprised of runoff and monsoon rains that the local cattle and wildlife enjoy. Trust me, it's not a lake for swimming. In the dry season, the trail will cross part of what might be underwater in the rainy season. The shoreline is lined with larger rocks and isn't a necessarily pleasant drive, so if you haven't aired down by this point, you probably should. Once past the lake, you'll head back out again to the pasture and views of the surrounding San Francisco Peaks. There are sneaky rocks and erosion along this trail, so a pleasant jaunt is better than a speed record along this path. There are no major obstacles on this trail, but also no service either, so offline maps are recommended.
