Trail Overview

This trail offers a fantastic introduction to desert driving, primarily wide enough for two cars and framed by Joshua Trees. While there are a few soft sand patches to be aware of, the ride is generally smooth. Consider this trail as a connection between Giant Rock and the Integratron. Both locations share a fascinating history worth exploring. Since cell service is unreliable (provider-dependent), it's recommended to download information about these landmarks before you go. Many visitors enjoy reading aloud about the history, like a campfire story, upon arrival. Giant Rock and the Integratron are both steeped in intriguing tales, ranging from UFO sightings to sound bath meditations. Be sure to research their unique stories beforehand.

Most of the road is firm; however, be aware of soft spots as the desert wind is constantly changing the surface.

History

Giant Rock and the Integratron boast a rich history that's well worth downloading before you head out. Giant Rock's story begins with Frank Critzer, who, like a desert tortoise, dynamited a dwelling into the rock's north side in the 1930s. He lived there until his unfortunate demise in 1942 during a police investigation when he blew himself up under the rock. In the 1950s, Giant Rock became a hub for UFO enthusiasts. The rock itself split in the early 2000s, revealing its underlying white granite. Nearby stands the Integratron, built in 1957 based on instructions allegedly received from visitors from Venus. Now used as a meditation center, the Integratron is famous for its unique sound baths. Download info to delve further into the fascinating history of both Giant Rock and the Integratron on your own.
