Trail Overview
Ax Park is a 2-mile single track that connects Hughes Creek to Ditch Creek and then to Divide NRT. The south end starts at the end of Hughes Creek, at an intersection with a nonmotorized mountain bike trail. Ax Park goes north from the trail sign, on a faint trail up the grassy and overgrown hillside. It's a wide-open hillside for 100 yards and it's hard to see the trail, but look for the tracks that head towards the burned trees. You have to go over chunky tufts of bear grass that kick you around, so you'll need some momentum. The rest of the trail is narrow, over lots of embedded rocks, and through pine trees that you have to pick your way through. It has tight corners as you keep climbing. There's a steep slope near the end of the trail that gets rockier and more challenging. Follow the cairns through the rocky section. The trail goes through a burn area from the 2012 Mustang Fire so there is constant potential for lots of downed logs.
