Trail Overview

This is a fun and easy single track through a forest of giant white pines in the Clearwater National Forest. The south end starts from an intersection with Beason Meadows and it heads north. Turn right at the 4 way intersection, and it heads downhill to a creek. The downhill is cut in to the side of a mountain with a few curves and one tighter switchback. There's a little bit of exposure here, but the trail is pretty wide. The trail has good dirt with lots of traction and not much dust. There's a few roots and brake bumps and loose sticks, but pretty much no rocks for the first half of the trail. Turn left at the first intersection to follow this trail, and stay right at the intersection with the 224c spur. This trail is really well signed and very well maintained. There's cinder blocks in some of the downhill sections of the trail to prevent erosion, and wooden bridges across the marshy creek areas. It crosses a long wooden bridge before going into a shelfy section with a gradual incline with a bit more exposure here. The trail stays pretty wide and smooth with no rocks or obstacles so it's not too difficult. Most of the trail until this point has been shaded in the trees, but it climbs out of the forest to a drier section with some loose rock when it goes through a small chunk of private property. The trail here goes through a section of overgrown bushes before popping onto a logging road with expansive views of the national forest. The rest of the trail is a little bit confusing because it goes through a logging area and sections of the trail have been rerouted. There are a couple more sections of single track paralleling the logging road, and eventually one of the logging roads turns back into single track that connects to Palouse Divide Road on the north east end of this trail. It appears like the trail ends when it gets to the logging roads, but it does in fact go all the way through. You just have to look for where the trail restarts on the side of the dirt road.

Access Description

The Giant White Pine Trail System is made up of 10 or so easy-to-intermediate single tracks in the Clearwater National Forest near Emida, Idaho. The trailhead is at the paid Giant White Pine Campground, but there are only a few parking spaces here for small vehicles. Another good area to stage is at the Palouse Divide Nordic Ski Area on the north end of this trail system. This is a larger pull-off on Highway 6 that can accommodate more vehicles and bigger rigs. This area can have frequent trail closures due to logging activity in the area, so it's best to check with the Forest Service website ahead of time for closures along White Pine Drive.
