Trail Overview

Squaw Creek ATV trail is 2.5 miles long, starting from the trailhead at the end of Squaw Creek Road, north of Highway 75 from Clayton, Idaho. It begins as a wide two-track through the high desert/low alpine terrain full of sagebrush. The dirt trail starts climbing up the hillside immediately with loose rocks on the trail's surface. Although the trail stays an appropriate width for an ATV for most of the trail, it has one narrower shelf spot where it traverses across the bottom of a steep slope full of loose rocks. The bulk of the trail goes through a dry pine tree forest, with a mix of sun exposure and some shade. It goes through a shallow creek crossing, then into a rocky section with medium-sized embedded boulders in the middle of the trail that must be ridden over. This would require some articulation for an ATV and increase the difficulty. After that rock obstacle, it keeps climbing up from the river drainage with a few hairpin turns and a steep, loose hill climb. It ends at a trail sign indicating the end of the ATV designation, and only dirt bikes can continue north. ATVs can ride this as an out-and-back or continue onto the Leg Creek ATV Trail, which is easy. Squaw Creek ATV Trail is open 7/1 - 9/30 for motorized use.
