Trail Overview
River Forest Loop Trail is an eccentric, bi-directional off-road trail that runs along and near the Manistee River. Most of the trail is a combination of dirt, sand, and grass. You'll embark through a heavily wooded forest, alongside a couple of tall sand dune bluffs, over several exposed tree root sections, and next to a harvested forest throughout this track. Along the trail, you'll find MANY great dispersed campsites right next to the river. If you plan on camping off this trail, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY, and please seek more information at the local DNR Office/Ranger Station prior to camping here. Like most Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause downed trees, washouts, & mud holes. There are several places with rutted-out mud holes. Some have bypasses around them, while others don't. Use caution when attempting to go through. There are also a few extra sandy spots to keep an eye on. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. Regardless of the conditions, this is an all-around fantastic trail!
