Trail Overview

This is a 1.4-mile long 50" trail that follows some powerlines through the Pipestone OHV area in the Deerlodge National Forest. The west end is accessed off of Delmoe Lake Road at a rock pinch point, and there is dispersed camping nearby all along Delmoe Lake Road. The trail has moderate obstacles, starting with a steep climb from the road under the powerlines. The climb is tricky because it's covered in loose pea gravel with deep ruts, and you must find the high points. There is a parallel route next to the rutted section that is much easier, so you don't have to ride through the ruts. Big boulder faces are in the middle of the trail, creating small ledges. It's also windy and curvy below big pine trees and next to giant granite egg-shaped boulders. It goes straight east until it hits another road. This trail is straight across the OHV area if you are parked near the Homestake Trailhead and want to access more trails on the east side of Pipestone.

Access Description

The Pipestone OHV area is a popular riding area for dirt bikes, ATVs and UTVs near Butte, Montana. It's a low alpine, high desert terrain that can be hot in summer, and crowded on weekends. There is intermittent cell service throughout the trails, and trails are marked with trail ratings and designations. There is a large dirt parking area for trailers on Delmoe Lake Road off of Highway 90 exit 241, north of the highway, that accesses the east end of the trail system. There are also dispersed camp sites and a large dirt parking lot off of Highway 90 exit 233, which accesses the west end of the OHV area from the Homestake Trailhead.
