Trail Overview

The Oil Well ATV trail is 11.6 miles of easy two-track through the Gallatin National Forest south of Big Sky, Montana. This trail starts at the Oil Well Trailhead off of FS Road 2522. It makes a semi-circle as it goes south to intersect with the Minnie Wapiti and Carrot Divide single tracks. ATVs will have to ride this as an out-and-back as it only connects to a single track. The whole trail is very easy. The majority of the trail is a smooth dirt two-track that goes through wide open meadows and ridge lines with incredible views of the Madison Mountain Range. There's a bit of loose rock in sections, but it doesn't add any difficulty. This trail would be manageable for any skill level on any type of ATV. It is open to motorized use 7/16 - 12/1.
