Trail Overview
The Francis Marion National Forest, situated north of Charleston, South Carolina, bears the name of the Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, nicknamed "the Swamp Fox" by the British. It is entirely encompassed by the Middle Atlantic coastal forests ecoregion and is characterized by a subtropical coniferous forest. One of the main access roads on the forest's eastern side is a high-speed packed dirt road, providing swift access to North Hampton Road from the pavement. The majority of this route runs along the crest of a tall berm, surrounded by swamplands.
