Trail Overview
Mary's Trail is one of the more popular and longer single tracks in the Whitewash Recreation Area that has some fun challenges in this Mars-like landscape. This one is full of steep climbs and descents up sandstone mesas, which can definitely look intimidating for anyone new to this type of terrain. Most of the trail is intermediate difficulty, with a few even steeper spots that make it more of an advanced trail because if you don't stay committed to the steep climbs, there's a higher consequence when riding on a pure rock slab. Mary's Trail starts and ends in a sandy wash with whoops, but the entire middle section rides over red sandstone mesas. The very first climb up and out of the wash will give you a taste of what the rest of the trail will be like. There are white paint markings on the slab rock the entire way to help you follow the trail. Sometimes the trail will take a hard turn or dip into a sandy spot, but you'll need to just keep looking for the paint markings. There are a couple of spots where the trail gets close to the edge of the sandstone mesa with more exposure where you'll just need to pay attention more. The trail will keep going up and down and around and over the rock formations. The key with the steep climbs is to keep your weight forward and stay steady and committed. Keep your weight back on the downhills and lightly feather both brakes without overly braking. The sandstone has more traction than you think. There are a couple of signed intersections where it crosses a Jeep trail, then indicates that Jeeps go in one direction while dirt bikes go in another. There are a couple of harder spots near the east end that are even steeper with small ledges like a long sustained steep climb. Overall this is a really fun challenge and one of the harder trails in the area.
