Trail Overview
Sliplock Gulch-Sliplock Lite is a 2.7-mile point-to-point trail rated 6 of 10 located within the Sand Mountain Open Riding OHV Area. Sliplock Gulch offers sandy washes and big climbs. Sliplock Gulch is the primary trail with a rating of 6, while Sliplock Lite follows the primary trail but uses the bypasses for all of the major obstacles and is rated 4. The first section from trailhead to the gatekeeper follows a scenic rim road from the dunes to the bottom of the gulch. Once into the gulch, the gatekeeper is a 15-foot slick wall climb before continuing further up the wash. The first major obstacle is called "Hang em High" and up and over "V-notch" which requires the passenger side to ride high on the wall. Then there are a series of large waterfalls which must be negotiated to include "Angry Inch Falls," "Horseshoe Falls," and "Coyote Falls." These are not your typical waterfall but complex obstacles with multi-steps and cracks to negotiate. At this point, the trail exits the canyon and continues along one of the mountain connector trails for about three-quarters of a mile before it enters the last section of the trail. This last section has a few moderate obstacles until you reach the end. Here you will find "Hardtop Alley" a deep crack with an up and over notch and off-camber waterfall. The obstacle gets its name due to the fact that if you slip off the wall, the driver's side will definitely see some damage. There is an optional wall that can also be attempted just before entering into the alley. All of the major obstacles have bypass lines which create the Sliplock Lite trail. Cell phone service is generally good throughout the trail and the nearest services are located in Hurricane.
