Trail Overview

White Canyon Road is a 4.9-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10 located in San Juan County. The road is located within the Hite Ranger District of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The road is open to conventional vehicles OHVs and street-legal ATVs. The road consists of a hard-packed surface with embedded rocks. The road is well used by travelers looking for remote camping sites. The National Parks Service has restricted travel on this road west of the loop end into the shoreline access area. Only foot travel is allowed into the designated area. Hite is a remote Ranger District located at the top of Lake Powell, adjacent to the confluence of the Colorado and Dirty Devil Rivers. The Hite Ranger Station is currently closed and all backcountry permits for Hite and Orange Cliffs are being issued by the Hans Flat Ranger Station. Roughly 5 miles down the canyon spills into the upper end of Lake Powel. Between 1946 and 1964 the Hite Ferry was the only way across the river. This is an extremely remote area with no services and the potential not to see others for an extended period of time. The nearest services are located in Hankesville, over 50-miles to the north and the nearest hospital is in Blanding 70 miles to the south.
