Trail Overview

Birdseye Gulch is a side trip of Mosquito Pass with a reputation for a section of unruly mud bogs. The bogs used to be impassable, but recent repairs by the local 4WD community have made them driveable, but still very challenging. Wave to the tourist train that comes through occasionally. There is a parking area at the north end off of Highway 91, which is where most unlicensed vehicles start.

I was driving my 2018 Raptor and my friend was driving her 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road. Both are little higher than stock. We went north to south starting at 91 heading towards Mosquito Pass. It had rained/snowed the night before so in the trees the trail was wet, but outside the trees it was covered in snow. The width of this trail made it particularly difficult for my Raptor, the Taco had it a little “easier”, clearance wise we were both okay. There’s a section that’s off camber leaning towards the driver’s side to a drop off. That was nerve racking for me because I was right on the edge and the trail was wet, so I had serious concerns about slipping, but you’re reading this so I made it lol. There is hardly anywhere to get by anyone coming in the opposite direction. There’s an open area where the train tracks are, but when you’re in the thick in of the trail, there isn’t any room to get by one another.

Trail conditions are good. Rocky and wet with a little muddy sections. Recommend at least skids. Lockers will help on uphill rocky sections, but not necessary. Completed in 91 Land Cruiser with 2" lift and 33s. No lockers used.

Great trail! it's a better to climb than desend. Rocks, roots, off chamber, it's worth it!
