Trail Overview

Airport Trail is a long single-track trail in the Coconino National Forest south of Flagstaff, Arizona, in the Kelly Motorized Trail System. This one is about a 17-mile loop, with lots of tight twisty turns, and full of rocks. There is a trailhead on the north end at the start of Mary's Dinner, and it also connects to Seminary on the south end. The south part of the loop has some of the more interesting and challenging parts of the trail, with some moderate rock ledges, and some shelfy sections that go over a natural stone bridge, with a bit of exposure. These are intermediate difficulty and pretty scenic. The middle of the loop near the Airport Connector is easier, with many sections that are sandy like a turn track, with bermed corners and lots of whoops. It goes through a grassy flat forest floor underneath tall dispersed pine trees. The northern part of the loop is full of loose, chunky, volcanic rocks that make for a very bumpy ride. This one will beat you up over time since it is 17 miles long and rocky for most of the trail. It crosses a road several times but is well-signed each time and easy to follow. There are also several big downed logs that the trail has been re-routed around each time.

Difficulty

Overall, this is an intermediate trail due to a very rocky surface and some intermediate rock ledge obstacles, but it could be even harder for riders inexperienced in riding in rocky terrain.
