Difficulty

Moderate. Suitable for stock, high-clearance SUVs unless extremely muddy or snow covered. Allow time in spring for trail to dry out. Nasty mud bog of past years now has easy bypass.

Definitely harder than a 2. Switchbacks are the hardest part with a big boulder in the middle of the road you have to get around. Also some small ledges and very rocky for about half the trail until you reach the summit if you're doing it from west to east.

Do not attempt from the north due to rough, tight and some large obstacles on trail 4 miles or so from summit. On X has it rated as a 2 but more like a 5+. If you want to hit the summit take Geyser Pass route.

This is NOT a easy or moderate trail. OnX said this was a 2. same rating as Geyser Pass. It is at least a 5-6. Do not take the loop as a return from Geyser. It will ruin your day. Ugly is the word I would use.

This trail is mostly easy, but there are some obstacles that make it rated too low - tight switchbacks, large rocks between 12-24" in the road, and LOTS of opportunity for pinstriping.

Access Description

Head south on Hwy. 191 from Moab. Go about 7 miles and turn left on Old Airport Road after mile marker 118. Pass gravel operation and turn right on Spanish Valley Drive. After 0.6 mile, stay left on La Sal Mountain Loop Road and follow it 4.2 miles to Pack Creek Road, C.R. 128, on right Go 2.7 miles and stay straight on 0073 until you reach vault toilet at 3.0 miles.
