Trail Overview
This short yet challenging loop around Cerro Colorado begins near Ejido 27 at the tunnel and is rated due to a particularly tough stretch within the first half mile. Here, you'll encounter deep sand, part of a section used in the recent SCORE 400 off-road race. Without sufficient clearance, low tire pressure, and solid experience driving on sand, getting through this portion is challenging, and it's highly recommended not to attempt it alone. After exiting the wash to the left, the remainder of the loop is on hard-packed terrain, making for an easier ride. Along the way, you'll enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and may spot quail, roadrunners, and other native birds. While mapping, all gates were open, but if any are closed, be sure to open and close them as you pass.

Difficulty
The only challenging part of this route is the arroyo near the start, where the sand is exceptionally deep in places, making it easy for a solo traveler to get stuck and turn a simple trail into a long, frustrating day. To navigate it successfully, be sure to air down your tires, bring Max Trax, and maintain your speed. After the rains, this section may become more manageable, as it was before the recent SCORE race. However, during or after a storm, it's best to avoid any arroyo altogether.
