Trail Overview

This trail diverges to the right at the midpoint of the La Bocana to San Jose route, offering a more challenging but rewarding experience. By choosing this path, you'll be treated to stunning ocean views, though you'll also face a more demanding journey characterized by steep climbs and descents. The terrain is often loose, with sections marred by large holes and deep ruts, some reaching depths of up to two feet. As you embark on this route, the steep climbs ahead will be visible almost immediately. You'll ascend these inclines, descend through a valley, tackle another significant climb, and finally descend to the ocean. After reaching the shoreline, the trail turns left, taking you along the coast for about a mile before climbing to a point marked by a structure atop the hill. The following section is particularly challenging, with the deepest ruts and largest holes, so proceed with caution. This final stretch offers a beautiful, winding descent and a subsequent climb that leads you back up and over to Punta San Jose.

Difficulty

This trail features deep ruts and steep climbs, even in dry conditions, so caution is essential. Be particularly mindful of the deep holes, as maneuvering around them can be difficult given the current state of the trail. After heavy rain or storms, this route is not recommended. **Fuel Warning**: Upon reaching Punta San Jose, be aware that the nearest fuel station is still 25-30 miles away and does not currently carry diesel.
