Trail Overview
Starting in the pueblo of La Rumorosa, a stop at the famous restaurant and bakery Las Altura, just 500 meters from the trailhead, is highly recommended. The trail begins at the highway, currently a mix of dirt and dark gravel, with ongoing construction suggesting that the first half mile may eventually be paved. The dirt road is fairly smooth and well-maintained, with occasional light washboards. While this route is not particularly challenging, more difficult options are available off the main road once you reach the park and continue. The scenery is stunning, transitioning from desert to pine shrubs mixed with desert plants, and eventually to larger pine trees. Pay close attention to the map, as many forks are not marked with the Laguna Hanson route. There are campground turn-offs along the way with small stores and supplies but do not rely on them exclusively. This trip is a great choice for anyone who thinks Mexico is all desert and beaches--they will be pleasantly surprised. In winter, be prepared for occasional snow in the higher altitudes. Keep in mind that the listed completion time only covers the journey to the intersection of the Laguna Hanson trail. This point marks just over halfway to the park.
