Trail Overview
This trail branches off Dos Ranchos, and as soon as you leave the main road, you'll notice the worn tracks, bearing deep tire ruts that demand high clearance and careful navigation. Erosion from rain has created sizable crevices, adding to the challenge. The route features numerous descents, leading into lush green areas nourished by water sources, while ascents bring loose rocks and striking red mountain landscapes. Along the way, you may spot a variety of desert wildlife, including birds, kangaroo mice, and occasionally, one of the elusive cats native to the region. Eventually, the trail climbs to a high point offering a long, rugged stretch with panoramic views of red mountains in every direction, before reconnecting with both the Dos Ranchos Trail and the Old Race Trail. For those seeking a less traveled path, the Old Race Trail offers a more preserved experience, with shallower scars due to years of little use, making it ideal for an out-and-back adventure.

Difficulty
The Old Race Route features steep, heavily rutted climbs and descents that require careful wheel placement and airing down for optimal traction. Sharp slate rocks are scattered throughout the area, posing a risk of tire damage, so precise navigation is essential. After rain or a major storm, the trail becomes significantly more challenging, with its difficulty rating increasing due to the softened terrain and deeper ruts.
