Trail Overview
Atkins Cutoff begins as a wide dirt track that meanders through the juniper trees of the Prescott National Forest. Very quickly, however, the story of Arizona forests begins to ring true. Rocky, loose, steep inclines and declines present the main challenges of this trail, with switchbacks that must be handled in true Austin Powers fashion. The downhills, while steep, off-camber, and shelf-road-ish, also present erosion and boulder obstacles. At times, the trail seems to peter out for a few hundred meters at a time. Caution and offline maps are urged as there is no cellular service in this area.
