Trail Overview
This trail takes you through the heart of the White Mountains. Start your journey by stopping at the Big Lake store for snacks, and end up in Hannagans Meadow for lunch or dinner. Head out on FS249 and make a right onto Buffalo Crossing Rd. As you follow this trail, you will see some of the most beautiful areas in the White Mountains. You can experience Big Lake and the Black River Wilderness, you have the opportunity to see a lot of Elk and Deer. You may even see Big Horn sheep In the Black River area. This section of the trail is a well-maintained forest service road; a standard two-wheel drive vehicle can complete this portion of the trail. The last portion of the trail (Cienega Rd) begins to climb in elevation (9000+) and becomes a little rocky. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, but 4-wheel drive is not needed. This is an easy, fun trail/forest road and an excellent way to see some of the prettiest backcountry in the White Mountains.
