Trail Overview

This is an out-and-back trail to the west side of the Cathedral Rock formation. This trail begins as a gravel sandy wash that twists and turns up through different rock formations. The beginning of the trail is heavily used for target shooting. There is lots of trash being left, even a couple of shot-up abandoned cars. Continue up the wash and the rock formations become more stunning all around. The Cathedral Rock towers in the distance, guiding the way. The trail will turn right out of the wash and head up, and the driving surface gets more gravelly and rocky. It is not difficult, but there are a few slightly off-camber sections, probably from water runoff. This trail is not recommended for vehicles with trailers. Most of the trail is narrow and only one vehicle wide, with few places to pass. The sandy gravel wash section at the beginning of the trail has a few pull-offs. Later on, pull-offs are harder to find. Continuing up toward the Cathedral Rock, there will be another main shooting site with less trash. Continue up the canyon, and you will be rewarded with a wide-open campsite on the edge of a small canyon that looks up at Cathedral Rock. There are some different smaller trails to explore, either with a vehicle or on foot at the end of the trail. The campsite also looks out at the big working mine in the area. At night, there might be lights from the mine. There's no cell service at this campsite. Pack in and pack out all trash. This area can also get extremely hot in the summer months. Bring extra water and supplies if traveling during the summer.
