Trail Overview
This route is an out-and-back adventure up to the Emerald Isle Mine. At the time of mapping, the trail up to the mine was open (no barricades or closed gates), but that could potentially change at any time. It is unmaintained and has erosion damage on and beside the trail. Avoid wet conditions, as the trail may become challenging or even impassable. The first point of interest is the two rusted silos that can be seen from the main road. Venture a little further and you'll find old runoff pools, abandoned equipment, and the massive open pit mine. There are a dozen trails around the area if you care to go exploring. But be aware that warning signs are posted, "Caution: Behind this sign is an area with tailings from past mining activity. Soils may contain metals which have been determined to be hazardous to your health." Despite the name "Emerald Isle", emeralds were not the commodity of this mine, but rather copper.
