Trail Overview
Freefall is one of the hardest trails in Hartman Rocks, full of advanced rock features that should only be attempted by very experienced riders. It is a downhill-only trail, so you must ride it from south to north. The southern entrance is kind of hidden behind a big rock slab hill, but once you start the trail there are lots of warning signs, telling you to scout the obstacles and ride within your limits, and warning of upcoming steep sections. The trail is less than a mile, but there are 15+ big rock slab ledges and obstacles. The slab has good traction and some obstacles are like ramps and rounded at the top, but the extreme steepness and size of some of the later obstacles make it very challenging and an advanced trail. Riders need technical skill to get up the steep ledges without looping out, and proper breaking technique when going down the steep slab. It's mostly downhill obstacles, but there are a few uphill ones as well. It goes through narrow rocky spots, and shelfy and steep spots when curving around the hills. It comes up to a split for a shortcut and a scenic route. The scenic route has some more rock obstacles, goes under cool rock walls, and brings you to one of the steepest sections. There are a couple of really big drop-offs near the northern end, where if you don't commit, you could end up endo-ing over your bars. It's hard to see the best line when you come up to the downhill ledges, so it's best to come in slowly and scout your line. Once you go down the last big drop-off, you'll understand why it's designated for downhill-only traffic, as it would be extremely difficult to get back up. Overall it's a really fun challenge for advanced riders.
