Trail Overview
This broad, well-maintained dirt and gravel trail runs along Hegben Lake. It can be accessed from Highway 191 and Highway 20 just outside the town of West Yellowstone. The Madison Arm Resort Camp and Marina is at the halfway point on this trail and appears to be the reason this trail is so well maintained. They have a small general store with public access. This is an excellent place to start if you are looking for a stunning view of the lake and a lovely day-use area. There are lots of pullouts off the 191 near the trail's end. Most of them are large enough for several vehicles and have water access. There is lots of fishing and boating, and signs around Hegben warn of Toxic Algae. Avoid human contact and pets drinking from the lake when green scum or algae is present. Between Highway 20 and The Madison Arm Resort Camp and Marina, the trail turns away from the lake and heads into tall trees. Several narrower dirt trails break off from this main trail and are popular with smaller 4x4 vehicles. In winter, this is also a popular snowmobile area. There is decent cell service out here as it is close to town.
