Sand Hollow Trail #2042

Trail Overview

Trail 2042 is just over 5.5 miles of primarily sandy and/or rocky washes. It runs north and south between the Honeymoon Trail (Extended) and the Temple Trail North. It's definitely the trail less traveled and a nice option away from the crowds. The sandy washes are soft, especially after rain. The rocky washes have obstacles mostly under 18" high. In places, the trail can be hard to find due to recent rains, and if the wash gets too narrow or the obstacles too big, there is a workaround. In some places, this seemed like a dirt bike/quad-only trail, but the BLM map rated it for full-size and SXSs. Our SXS is 72" wide, and we were able to complete the trail. The "walls" of the wash are beautiful creations of red sandstone, red dirt and white rock, which locals have said is gypsum. The gypsum is weaved into the dirt in thin little layers that look like strings on the side of the wall. The numerous mesas around Sand Hollow give an excellent view in the distance. Be sure to bring your camera. This area is open to grazing during the winter months, so watch for cattle. Leave all gates as you found them. If closed, make sure you get them closed well. Trails in this area of the Utah desert are vast and numerous. Bring extra fuel, and lots of water, and spend the day exploring. During the summer months, beware of rattlers. They're here. Carry recovery equipment such as a tow rope, a snatch block, and a shovel. Starting Feb 2023, Utah is going to begin enforcement of their new law, which requires an online education course for all off-roaders. The free course is available online now. Google "Utah OHV Education Course," and the free test will pop up. It's an easy test that will only take 15-30 minutes, and it's required for all off-roaders, Jeeps, SXSs, dirt bikes, and ATVs. Kids under the age of 18 will have to take the Youth Education Test at the same site. After completing the test, print out the certificate to carry with you which shows you completed the course. We have taken it, and it's really no big deal. Good reminders about trail etiquette and trail preservation.

Difficulty

Heavy rains and springtime runoff will cause erosion and will move obstacles that may change the path of the trail in places. Obstacles are typically less than 18" and with decent clearance, they're not hard to maneuver. Finding the trail in some places is a challenge. Avoid this trail when running deep water.
