Trail Overview

This beautiful out-and-back is a nice solid run into the expansive grassy hills. You'll pass through a large section of burned-out forest and a few dense green sections where the juniper trees survived the burn. Keep your eyes peeled for a small two-rig campsite nestled in the trees, protected from the wind. There are also a few level spots right off the trail with outstanding views but no protection from the wind. The dried grasses contrasting with the old burnt-out tree skeletons are quite a sight to see. You will pass a few cattle tanks, and the trail ends at the large wildlife water collection structure. Just past the structure, the route reclaims without access to the Hidden Cliffs edge unless on foot. Plenty of different bird species are darting this way and that, and you may even see a deer. This area is very remote, and help is a long way away. Be sure to bring a satellite communication device and be sure somebody knows your travel plans. There is no cell service out here, so plan and download your offline maps and bring plenty of water. It is a desert, after all.

Difficulty

There are a few loose rocky climbs with off-camber transitions and washouts. With careful line choice, a basic SUV with AWD will make it. It could be muddy when wet and impassable in some spots.

History

The Arizona Strip is a vast arid region on the north side of the Grand Canyon that encompasses a variety of landscapes and climates within its nearly 3 million acres, as well as centuries of human history. It is 200 miles long and accessed only by two major highways on either end. Because of its lack of easy access, the Strip remains one of the most remote and least-visited parts of the state.
