Trail Overview

This is a short loop trail out to the old Alycone Mine. The mine is at the middlemost point of the trail. The Alycone Mine is located on a hillside and is visible from the trail. There is access to turn off the main route and drive up to the mine. At the top is an open flat area that 3 or 4 vehicles can park or use to turn around. There is a large mineshaft/hole in the ground and some tailings. There is also a fire ring up at the mine, and this spot makes for a nice dispersed campsite with views out over the valley. Highway 10 is visible down below. On the way to the mine, the trail goes over some large slick rock sections with steep transitions. It also crosses a large sandy wash with boulders in the middle. An abandoned BMW is at the turn to get out of the wash. The vehicle is sitting in the corner of the turn, which causes the trail to become very tight. It could be difficult for larger vehicles to make it around. The trail heads back into a valley with some stunning mountains. There is another dispersed campsite tucked back in the valley. It is at the entrance of a trail that leads to private property. One narrow off-camber wash section is on the more northern side of the loop. Generally, this would be the easier way to get to Alyconce Mine. Pick up the loop off of Highway 10 closer to Oatman. The trail is easy--dirt and sand. There are a couple of dispersed campsites at the beginning of this end of the trail. Picking up the loop from the southern end, the trail has steep transitions into a wash and up out of the slick rock immediately. This area gets extremely hot in the summer months, and this trail has no shade. Bring extra water and supplies if traveling in the hot season. This is also an area prevalent with rattlesnakes. There is an excellent area to disperse camp close to the town of Oatman.

Difficulty

There are steep transitions up and down rock faces. Some sections of the trail cross over slick rock and are very off-camber. There is a long, deep, sandy wash to cross. The middle of the wash has a boulder section to get over. Then, the turn out of the wash is very tight, with an abandoned vehicle in the middle of the turn, causing the trail to be narrow at this point.
