Trail Overview

Traverse one of the prettiest passes that connects the South Fork of the Boise River to the Middle Fork of the Boise River. Take in the beauty of the high elevation meadows, spot wildlife, even pass through an old Ghost town. Popular with hunters in the fall, Phifer Creek Pass offers many views, access to several spurs, and of course access to the Middle Fork.

Difficulty

Narrow road at times, with blind corners, steep inclines, protruding rocks, and deadfall. The road is usually graded every spring before Memorial Day Weekend, however, do not always count on it being graded. The road may be impassible before it is graded due to tree deadfall and snow drifts, please plan ahead and check conditions accordingly. Running water on road is possible with melting snowfall, and medium-sized rocks do protrude up from the road surface.

Access Description

Access is primarily from the south. Travel north to the Ghost Town of Rocky Bar from the town of Featherville. Proceed through Rocky Bar on the main road, continue on until you start climbing the pass. Access is also possible from the southwest via Trinity Ridge Road, it intersects Phifer Creek Pass near Bear Creek, roughly 1/3 of the way up the pass. From the north it can be accessed via Middle Fork Road at the Phifer Creek/Swanholm Road intersection. Access from the north via Swanholm Road is just a matter of crossing the Middle Fork Road, and crossing the bridge over the Middle Fork.
